As an applied linguist, I am interested in a wide range of issues related to language-in-use with reference to the systematic ways in which speakers use language as a resource for organizing their social life in both ordinary and institutional settings. In addressing these issues, I draw upon the perspectives of discourse-pragmatics and sociolinguistics, and mostly upon the belief that “language has a heart, as well as a mind of its own”.

응용언어학자로서 , 언어가 실제 의사소통상황에서 어떻게 사용되는지 그 체계성을 규명하는데 관심을 갖고 있습니다. 그리하여 화자가 사회구성원으로서 일상대화나 제도상황에서 다양한 사회적 행위를 구성하는데 언어를 어떻게 사용하는지를 분석하는 데 연구의 초점을 맞추고 있습니다. 이러한 언어 사용에 관한 제반 주제를 다루는 데 있어서 담화 -화용론과 사회언어학의 시각에서 연구를 수행해 오고 있으며, 기본적으로 언어는 논리적이고 이성적인 측면뿐 아니라, 정의적이고 감성적인 측면도 갖고 있는 의사소통의 자원이라는 연구적 시각을 견지하고 있습니다.

My research interests are in the discourse analysis of various forms of ordinary and institutional talk. From the discourse-pragmatic and sociolinguistic perspectives, I have investigated various discourse and interactional phenomena, which include the use of discourse markers, cross-linguistic comparison of speech acts, and the analysis of various types of sequences in Korean and English conversations.
